Hi Mimi...when cats mount one another is to establish dominance--top/alpha cat. This is very commonly witnessed among all cats species from exotic to domestic whether they are spayed/neutered or not.

I spoke with trainers because I took in a new pup that does this to my other dog and 2 cats, all of whom are neutered. The trainers and vet all told me that it's new pup's way of showing dominance. Seems all the others have been here for a while and new pup needs to show he is the alpha around them! If you go to 5 trainers, you will get 5 different answers on how to resolve the problem. I even read that you should mount the animal to show who is the alpha in the bunch. Spray the cat that is mounting with water, give him a short NO!, but discourage the behavior however you can.

One of my cats does that to the other. They are both males, and neutered too. I believe it has something to do with showing the other that they are more powerful and dominent.

That is part of their way of dominating each other. The one doing the humping is generally the dominant male.
