for my 18th bday i got a tattoo as well. I agree with the lot about the chinese character... but if you like the idea of having something symbolizing love on your body, why not design something yourself... or if you have a friend who is an artist see if you could tell them what you are thinking and have them try to draw it up for you. Something you design yourself will always mean more to you than some flash you picked off of a wall or website. And remember, your body is your temple... decorate it as you wish!! Good Luck and have fun!!!!

honestly i think it isn't the greatest idea to get a chinese symbol at all unless you are chinese. why? well for starters how do you know that the symbol ACTUALLY says love? unless you consult a chinese person and they confirm it then you don't know for sure. and the slightest variations in chinese writing can change a word. if the artist swoops a little higher it could completely change the meaning.
generally i think it is a good idea to stay away from any language that you have no personal connection to and also cultural things (tribal) that you have to ancestral connection to.
also as a first tattoo i don't think the wrist is a great place. what if you decide you don't like it? i always think it is better to get a first second and even fifth tattoo somewhere that can be covered up until you have committed yourself to your tattoos. society will define you by your tattoos. it's not fair but it happens. and the sad thing is that even if your tattoo is small some people out there will judge you automatically and it could be a prospective boss.
think about it. if you have any questions i'd be glad to help.

This might just be me...but I don't know about getting the chinese character (they're not called symbols) esp if you aren't Chinese or you don't speak. I am Chinese and always find it a little odd when people tattoo characters on themselves but they aren't positive that the character really means the word that they want and the fact that it's Chinese has no significance to the person other than the fact that they think it's cool to have. Maybe that's just a weird quirk of mine. I would honestly do something that has meaning to you and has significance to you. If that really does, then go for it but I would really choose something that carries some value in your life and means something to you.

I may get a thumbs down for this answer but it's my thoughts on it....

I would be careful with the chinese symbol unless you KNOW somene who is chinese who can verify that that is what it really stands for. You should get something that has a lot of meaning to you. I was drug to the tattoo parlor the night of my initiation and now I hate that tattoo, however all the others I have (3 others) are all things I designed myself and put thought into and are really important to me. Also, I would suggest putting them someplace that can be hidden. I have one on each foot which can be covered with shoes, one on my upper back, easily covered by clothing or leaving my hair down and one on my thigh which is covered unless in my underwear or bathing suit. Just put a lot of thought into it.

As for the people who say, how will you feel when you are wrinkly and 80 and in a long term care facility with a tattoo? The same as all the other residents, I know more people WITH tattoo's than without.

I have Phil Ochs tattooed on my arm (people singer) I even have "Never Die" and a rose tattooed throughout my feet, with a tigerbat above the feet on my left foot for Tiger Army. I see me getting a pair extra musician tattoos. I have an Ochs lyric tattoed around the again of my neck (Sacred are the scars) and an Op Ivy lyric around the insides of each palms (It's lovely I might say... I should not have it another approach.) I'm considering a sizzling-rod tradition tat, skulls and roses and a banner, gotta decide upon the lyric to move within the banner regardless that. As it stands in these days, I'd in general decide on "In dying as in existence, I will come up" or "My sense of right and wrong consists of the burden of blood."

Hi Sassy, I have chinese wording on my back, and it's in chinese writing. It's near my spine. I had LOVE,and below that I have SPIRIT. THEY really look cool, and turn out nice. The tattoo artist send me to a chinese restaurant ,where a very nice chinese man translated LOVE,AND SPIRIT for me. I know these are the right symbol that makes these words.I had LOVE PUT IN RED INK,and Spirit Put In Blue Ink. They look great. So if that is what you want,go for it. Don't like anyone talk you into a tattoo you don't want. I have a total of 5 tats myself. Enjoy your tat when you get it. WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF TATTOOS. A Friend

Go to www.tattoofinder.com. They have a huge selection to choose from. It's your body. You have to choose for yourself what you want. Hell, I have Tommy Boy, written in old english, on the back of my neck. Some people ask me why. I simply say it was my choice and that it's my body. I have two more tattoos picked out from that website that I'm going to get. One on my back and the other I haven't decided yet. But, check out this site and find something that tells others something about you. Like your interests or perhaps your mothers name.

I have a tattoo on my ankle. To me getting a tattoo is a very personal thing. Maybe it would help you to watch "Miami Ink" it's a tattoo reality tv show. It's on TLC. That might help you make up your mind.

Good luck.

I do not understand this trend or need for girls to adorn themselves with tattoos. They are for life and let me tell you an older woman with tats is no beauty queen.

You are 18 - you have your natural beauty, personality and attitude to ensure you stand out from the crowd. Why be a sheep and get a tattoo? Act in haste & repent at leisure (is the rest of your life)!
