From the sounds of it, you are looking for a portrait photographer. I defintely agree with NOT going to walmart, sears, etc. Mainly you'll be getting your photo taken by a trained monkey who only knows how to shoot one way... bad.

Yellow pages are a great start, however - anyone can get their business into the yellow pages whether they are good or not. I'd suggest first starting at a national organization and working your way down.

PPA (Professional Photographers of America) is the largest organization of professional photographers. They have a great find a photographer setup that allows you to search for photographers by city, state, zip, etc. www.ppa.com

WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) is another great organization that allows you to search photographers from their website by region. www.wppionline.com

The one thing I'd also check for is to see if the person holds his (or her) CPP - that's Certified Professional Photographer. A photographer who holds this is not only reconized by the standard to be a great photographer, but is recognized by other professionals in the industry as a great photographer. As they are constanlty required to enter prints to be judged by other photographers

Look in the yellow pages of your local phone book under "Photographers". Do not go to Walmart or Sears or any place in a store if you want a professional photo!

You should try dropping by a fine arts exhibit when they are hosting a photographer. They can sell you really nice pictures there.
