I agree. When he first started with DEI I kind of rooted for him. Then he traded cars and teams w/ Jr, and couldn't do anything with them. He shouldn't be in NASCAR really. He has charisma, sells products well for sponsors, oh yeah, and has a brother who was a very good racer, but he can't drive worth a hoot. He should be on the PR end of the team. Oh well. Toyota will learn. I hope the contract isn't too long.

What was the last race he won, I can't remember. I think it was at Daytona like 3 or 4 years ago, when they ended the race halfway through because of rain, and he just happened to be at the front. I mean he can't even qualify half the time. Maybe that is why he has Jarrett on his team. At least he has a little talent, and he can get into the race on provisional, since he is a past champion.

Maybe we will get lucky and Mikey won't qualify for anything, then we won't have to listen to him whine about how crappy his car is, 10 laps in. I guess we need entertainment somehow.

I'm not a Waltrip fan, but I admire the guy for trying to blaze a trail in a new direction against-the-odds in a very competitive field.
To answer the question, I think he's wasting just as much of his time and money on Toyota as Toyota is wasting time and money on him.

I believe that Toyota picked Mickey because DW owns 3 Toyota trucks in the Nascar Craftsman Truck series, so DW probably had some kinda input on Toyota's decision.

Michael Waltrip has never won a non-plate race. His only victories are at Daytona and Talladega. He was terrible last year and missed a lot of races. I think Toyota could have done much better with their driver. Dale Jarrett's only win in the last 2 years was at Talladega. Vickers has only won one and that was at Talladega. The best drivers drive for Chevy, Ford, and Dodge.

beware!!!! Toyota has more money in auto racing that the rest combined, they will win, its not a if its a when,

now lets talk brand association, have any of you noticed how many nascar shows waltrip is on, like about every one on the speed channel ? watch and see if there will be a toyota symbol on his cap or shirt,

and finally lets remember that he is a field filler team, so any improvement to the team will be viewed as a direct result of Toyota's involvement

From a marketing point of view it is a good investment on Toyota's part. However, the driver that will carry Toyota in the racing part of all this will be Dave Blaney. He will be at the head of the class of Toyotas by the end of the year, in both Busch and Cup.

Mikey is not a person that I would turn to if I wanted to get Toyota going, but I don't think any of the big name drivers would switch their alliance with their teams when everything is working for them.Maybe Jr. could if he left DEI.

IMO, Toyota is using Mikey's name to get it out there. They know that Mikey is not a great driver but he is very popular and very talkative and so he is gonna put their name out there every chance he gets. Their using him for publicity.

Toyota is looking for teams that can get their name out there, what better way than DW and Mikey. DW is an announcer for the race, he can plug Toyota any chance he gets. I dont think its all about Mikey, alot of it is name sake.
