Listen. The most fun I've ever had in conversation springs from paying attention to the experiences/ inflections/ interpreted moods of another. Dabble in word play, ask them follow-up questions and lend an ear to when the conversation can stray to another, perhaps more fascinating topic. What do typical conversations between friends usually begin with? "How was your day?" is always a safe bet. Hear them out, make your own commentary and bounce from topics they feed you or that their recollections inspire in you. Above all, be genuine. Speak when you have something to say, not because you have to say something.

Ask something really random that can lead to more topics, like where the person would go if they could go anyplace in the world, or which path they would take if they weren't on the one they were taking, or where their dream home would be. Ask what their favorite cartoons were when they were little; my friends and I go on about that for hours. Ask about what they read, what they do, and their dreams. If you still can't get a conversation flowing naturally, give up. You're trying to seduce a log.

Ask them what their religious and political beliefs are. These are HORRIBLE things to start talking about at big get-togethers, but in an intimate conversation with someone close to you (when you're alone) it makes for very interesting, compelling conversation. Plus, you will learn something about the person you're asking these questions.

Everyone thinks they know how to get away with killing someone, ask them about how they would pull off the perfect murder. It's a topic that will last a while, plus, it'll give you a unique insight into 'em.
