The person above me forgot to mention Adelaide!

Yeah, it all depends on how much time you have and what kind of holiday you are after.

Sydney is Australias main hotspot really. Its one of the main tourist hits so its relatively busy there (for Australia). Has some good Bush Walk places and its popular for it ferry transportation -lotsa fun to get transported from one beach to the next by a ferry.
Queensland is also popular, you have the hot weather up there. A few theme parks and gorgeous beaches are why tourists go there. Scubadiving, snorkelling etc etc
Melbourne is good for shopping - clothes shopping. Have a lot of outlets there. Good for Theatre aswell.
Adelaide is the best place to go for a low key, relaxed holiday. Very laid back, slow paced, and the weather is always pretty good. Has great bush walks and beaches.
I havent been to Perth so dont know much about it, but I know a lot of people who like going there to surf.
Northern Territory has Ayers Rock (Uluru), which is a good part of Australia to see.
And Tasmania is cute! Very picturesque, lovely scenery.

So it depends what kind of holiday you are after. But definately Sydney and Queensland, then pick out of the others..
Road Trips are awesome to do in Australia - especially the Great Ocean Road between Victoria and Adelaide!!

Coolies.

Australia is a big place. That is like asking where would you recommend visiting in Europe or the United States. How long have you got? What are your interests?

If you were coming for a week, go to Sydney and the Blue Mountains. Two weeks add a trip to north Queensland and the Barrier Reef or Alice Springs and Uluru. Three weeks? Perhaps Darwin, Melbourne or Perth as well.

It also depends on the time of year, there are many events on in different parts of Australia from the Birdsville Races in early September to the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in early March. Northern Australia is great in the winter months but can be oppressivley hot and humid in the summer. Walking round Uluru when the temperature is 45°C is not recommended.

Travelling around Australia takes a long time unless you fly but there are some very interesting road and rail journeys. You can go from Mount Isa to Cairns to Brisbane to Sydney to Canberra to Melbourne to Adelaide and Perth by train with a diversion from Adelaide to Alice Springs and Darwin if you want to do it. It would take some time though.

Why not take a look at a few tourist brochures and choose what you want to do. There is plenty to see and do .

Not Perth...okay, okay, so I'm biased, I live there!

Queensland for a start, so you can see the Daintree Rainforest, Whitsundays, Great Barrier Reef and all the rest, including Australia Zoo.

Sydney is good for nightlife etc and Melbourne is good for the culture and retaurants. The Blue Mountains in NSW and the Hunter Valley.

Adelaide is not particularly exciting, the Barossa valley is not too bad and the Adelaide hills are worth a visit, but only if you like your food.

Canberra is somewhere to avoid. All it has is parliament house and the ANU (Aussie National University). Plus the Aussie National Museum.

Tasmania is okay, don't forget them! They have great scenery and the weather is slightly cooler.

Alice Springs has Uluru and the desert outback, spectacular place to go to. Really very different from anywhere else in the world.

Darwin is your gateway to Kakadu National Park, an awesome place to go, especially during the monsoon season (summer) when it gets flooded with life, including crocodiles and the like.

In W.A we have the wine region down south and the desert regions up north. We have some pretty spectacular places, but they take a while to drive to. :)

In the words of our tourism board, "Where the bloody hell are you?"

Sydney for the sheer awesomeness of the place - the view from the top of the Harbour Bridge takes your breath away - literally!!

Uluru is a place to visit once - it is really magical!

Port Douglas is very beautiful - the Great Barrier Reef is amazing but don't go when the water is choppy - you can't see a thing!!

I'm off to Australia next Christmas/New Year and we are taking in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Really looking forward to the drive from Melbourne to Adelaide along the Great Ocean Road!!

Enjoy .....

yeah it depends on what you're interested in and how much time you have. I had 3 months and it still wasn't long enough.

If you like the outback then:
Kakadu National park near Darwin
Alice Springs
Ayers Rock

Towns and Cities:
Sydney (my fave city)
Melbourne

Personal Faves:
Northern Territory:
Darwin and Kakadu
Katherine
Ayers Rock

East Coast:
Daintree National Park (north of Cairns)
Mission Beach (great YHA hostel in the forest and skydiving)
Noosa (Hippy/New Age feel about the place)
Airlie Beach
Sydney

Other places I was working on farms and didn't always get to have a good look at the place. Though no matter where you go... great people!!!
