Having dealt with those nice folks at the LA Dept of Revenue, you would ideally want to get an accountant to act as a buffer but as you are having difficulty paying your taxes, that is probably not an option.

Find out who to write to - if you must telephone them to find that out, keep the discussion to that point. Write to them, priority mail, return receipt requested. Make a sensible offer. The offer should not be too low, but one that you know you can handle. Nothing ticks off a taxman any more than people who say they will pay arrears and then don't. If they ask for forms, fill them in and return them in a timely manner. Make sure you know where to make payments and what sort of coupon, if any to use. you don't want the money getting lost in the system or, horror of horrors, getting credited to this year and then getting a refund (shouldn't ever happen, but it does).

No-one can guarantee that this will work but what have you got to lose?

Check to see if LA has a some sort of tax forgiveness program that would allow the person to repay back taxes without any penalties or interest.

If not, you chould set up an installment agreement with the state and pay them in installments based on amounts that you can afford. The installment agreement would allow you and the state to negotiate on the payments.

You could also try an "offer in compromise" arrangement with the state, if available, which allows you to negotiate with the state tax authority to pay a percentage of the back taxes due to your financial hardship.

If you do not pay your state taxes, the state has the right to levy your bank account then place a lien on those accounts and place a levy on your house. This is something that should be avoided at all costs as legal bills will be expensive to overturn the liens or levies once it's done.

Paying the taxes is cheaper than adding legal costs to the tax cost once a lien or levy is made, not to mention the emotional distress that will accompany such actions.

You should consult a tax professional in your area to assist you!

Good luck!

call up the LA tax dept. let them know that you have financial hardship and cant pay the tax owed right now. they will most likely set up a payment plan with you, where you can make monthly/weekly payments. or they can garnish your wages for a small amount each paycheck.

File the taxes and ask for an extention to pay them. They will work with you, but you need to file the taxes first before they will help you
