There is the rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, which some interpret to be a spiritual poem and some not. I'm just curious what a rubaiyat is, in general.

That would be a collection of Persian poems which Omar Khayyam called in his book (Rubaiyat). Rubaiyat means "pieces of poems" ... Each poem has 4 lines.

Basically Rubaiyat is a style of Persian Poetry.

Rubaiyat is a common shorthand name for the collection of Persian verses known more formally as the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. In fact, rubaiyat (a plural word derived from the arabic root meaning 'four') means "quatrains" in the Persian language.

I believe it is a collection of writings. Let's check dictionary.com: They seem to say:

Quatrians; as, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Sometimes in pl. construed as sing., a poem in such stanzas.

Peace!
