If the Pope has the power to get people out of purgatory through plenary indulgence, then why doesn't he just empty the place out now? If he has the power, but doesn't exercise it, then people are suffering after death at the whim of the Pope. Please make sense of this purgatory/indulgence stuff for me!!! I'm beginning to think Catholic teaching simply isn't defensible.

I think you have a mistakn idea of purgatory.

Are you perfect now? Most people would say no.

Will you be perfect in heaven? Most people believe yes.

Purgatory (or purgation) is the process of God's love changing our imperfect selves into perfect beings.

Depending on the amount of change needed by different people this can be an easy or slightly harder process.

Everyone in purgatory is on their way to heaven.

I don't think Mother Teresa of Calcutta had a very hard time of it.

With love in Christ.

When was this offical? Pope Keeper of the Keys (sounds Harry Potterish to me which I love by the way). Can save those in Purgatory which may or may not be real (and I'm saying this a Christian).

I did not know that the Pope was the keeper of purgatory, where from do you get your information?

People in Purgatory want to be there. They do not want to enter Heaven until they are sure they are properly cleansed and for them the justice part of the cleansing is pertinent
