Actually, if youre a good dog owner, you shouldnt have a dog suffering from separation anxiety- which is kind of what you have described. Your dog shouldn't be upset and reactive when you leave, and it shouldnt be overly excited when you get home- otherwise there can be problems. Most breeds of dog are more than happy to see you upon your return, and dont like you to leave, but if they are going overboard- there is probably a problem- which can cause other issues like problem barking, going to the toilet in the house, problem chewing, etc. Again- a well socialised dog should not be overly assertive with strangers. A dog that is aggressive towards people is a dog that is a liability. Most dogs are naturally a little protective, and tend to alert you to strangers, etc- but they shouldnt be reactive towards strangers. If you want a large, guarding breed of dog, then look into German Shepherd Dogs. These dogs are intelligent, require a large amount of exercise and training- but they are very loving and affectionate with their owners, and tend to be more aloof with strangers. Rottweilers are also a very loving, affectionate breed, that requires plenty of mental stimulation and exercise. They can be assertive with strangers, so care must be taken to properly train and socialise them from a young age. People tend to be scared of the larger dogs- particularly the large and 'bully' breeds. Regardless of how the dog acts. The neighbourhood kids wont come anywhere near my house because they are scared of my American Bulldog- even though she loves people and adores kids. Sometimes a scary looking dog is all you need to keep unwelcome people away- regardless of how the dog actually acts.

Dogs have the same 5 senses we do really but many of them are better than ours. Their is probably no 6th sense where they just know something is wrong but consider this.

Smell: When you feel differently, your body produces different chemical balances and the pheremones you give off will be different. Without question a dog will notice.

Sight: Dogs are going to see your body langauge being different

Sound: Your mood/health change the volume, clarity, etc... of the things you say and the sounds you make (e.g., breathing patterns are something dogs definitely pick up on).

Touch: You should not literally feel different to the dog best I can guess.

Taste: OK, this shouldn't change.

3 out of 5 is more than enough of a signal that you are different and may need more nuturing.

It's not so much the illness they can sense but the mood. They can tell from tone of voice, body language, eye movement, etc that something is wrong. Illness, depression, anger, disappointment, etc a dog will react.

They are now issuing dogs as medical/psychological treatments for the mentally depressed because they are able to detect when a person is becoming depressed and will act accordingly.

You have a very astute dog who is very intune with you and you're moods.

I bet he/she picks up on the little things out of place.

Absolutely! My dog will become concerned and anxious shortly before I have a migraine. At first I just thought that it was a coincedence, but then I mentioned it to his vet who was not at all surprised. She told me that dogs can smell changes in a person's body chemistry due to illness or stess. Now, when my dog starts acting like that, I will take a Midrin as a precaution. I can't remember the last time I had a full-blown migraine. I guess my dog is my perfect early warning system!

I would say yes dogs can sense when we are ill. Our family dog has sensed us many times. She knows when daddy is home from work before he walks in the door. We moved to Arizona and had to leave her overnight at the house we were stayin at and we went to a hotel. Athena ( our dog ) was left in the back yard. The next morning when we came back she was in the front yard waiting for us. The front door handle was scratched where she had been tryin to get in. There are to many times our Athena has showed her feelings for our family. So, again if your dog is a real part of your family, then yeah I would say the dog knows when you are ill.

Yes, dogs can sense how a person is feeling. A dog can sense when a human being is afraid of them, or if a person is in pain.

Absolutely. When my gramma got sick, she went to live with us. My dog, then, a German Sheppard, was extremely careful with her. He was a guard dog but acted like a guardian around her. When she would go out for a bit of sun, he would walk beside her very slowly and then lay at her feet when she sat down. Another time, my uncle was home and he suffered a stroke. My dog started to bark and came to my dad and dragged him to the back yard where my uncle had fallen. Besides there are lots of working dogs trained to help people with epilepsy, cancer and other illness. They are great.

I believe that dogs can sense when something is wrong. They're very perceptive animals and the longer you've had an animal, the more they will understand your moods, just like you understand theirs. I know that my dog does the same thing when I'm having a bad day or someone in my household is sad, etc.

I think so. I remember when I was feeling sad, my dog would come over to me and lay in my lap.

Even if it's not really true, I liked the affection and the fact that at least a dog likes me.
