You can take the Q train to the last stop in Manhattan (57th street/ 7th Avenue); stay in the first car.
Exit near 57th & 7th and you'll see Carnegie Hall.

You can also use http://www.hopstop.com/?city=newyork to see which trains that are near you that you can use to get there or that you can use to transfer to the Q.
