A formal agreement carries more weight and usually has proof, documents, witnesses, etc. An informal agreement usually has little proof - only the faith that both parties will abide by the agreement. Agreements are important because they allow society to function as a whole. If we could never "be sure" of someone's actions, we couldn't cooperate.

I think agreements are important to us because of the way they provide a sense of security. my understanding is that informal agreements are more casual and are not necessarily validated by anyone outside the agreeing parties (for instance, a couple agrees that they are going to exlusively date one another) whereas a formal agreement tends to be one that is validated by outside parties as well and there are usually explicit consequences laid out for breaking the agreement (i.e. marriage by the church or state). Still, formal or informal, agreement has to do with a sense of security, shared identity, communication...

I don't know the context you're asking this in, but usually, formal is written down and informal is verbal or understood.

They're important because they're the evidence that someone will do what they say they will, which allows us to have security in knowing the terms and boundaries we're working with.
