My 10 month old cat uses the litterbox but does not cover anything up. Instead, he brushes his paws up and down the inside of his litterbox, without really touching any of the litter. I usually cover anything up when I think about it, but I don't want to be doing this forever. Help?

The dominant cat will not cover it's feces (for the most part) If you have more than one cat, it's sometimes how one will show dominance over another. If the cat is doing any scratching at all, he probably thinks he's covering things up.

A couple of my cats scratch the side of the box rather than the litter. It drives me crazy but I figured it was just because they don't really understand what they are doing, it's just instinct. As long as they are going through the motions they think they are accomplishing something. After every meal, one or two of my cats decide to 'hide' the leftover food and they scratch the floor as if they are burying it. They think they are covering something but in reality, they aren't. I don't know how you can force a cat to dig at the litter rather than the side of the box when the cat thinks it's getting the job done.

I've tried adding more litter to the box so it covered the sides but all that did was cause a mess as they kicked it all over the place. Then, they ended up digging a hole anyway and scratched the side next time they went to the bathroom.

Now I have multiple cats which is a little different, but I do have 1 cat Gracie who doesn't cover up a thing, she doesn't even dig a hole!! She just jumps in does her business and jumps out!! I use Tidycat scoopable litter which is easier to get ahold of with the scoop. By the way Gracie is now 6 years old, so no good news here on it getting any better!!! But good luck to ya!!

My kitty did the same thing for a while... I started catching her in the litter box and making her cover it. I'd take her paw and cover it up, now she is doing it on her own. I did this only a couple of times.

Try using litter that don't have a strong scent to it. Sometimes a scent free arm and hammer and Tidy cat has a new one out called, Tidy lock, it has no scent to it and my cats respond well to it. Also must keep the litter box clean. You might want to pick up a littermaid since she won't cover up, that way, it gets disposed of and the smell don't linger.
