Anthropomorphism. Ancient Judaism ascribed all events to the will of God. In Exodus, it says that Pharoh hardened his own heart, that God hardened Pharoh's heart, and that Pharoh hardened his own heart.

Everyone is created for God's pleasure. With that being said, I go and try to answer your question.
Before this Earth/Heaven Age that we live in now, was there a first Earth/Heaven Age. We then were called the stones of fire. Neat huh.
This is when Lucifer rebelled against God when Pride was found in his heart. He led 1/3 of God's children away with him by convincing them that he was greater than God the Creator.
(If this sounds familiar to you then let them that need truth read)
This 1/3 of God's children together with the fallen angels and Lucifer fought with God and His angels along with a 1/3 of the children that aligned with God.
This leaves another 1/3 of God's children that did nothing but watch not making their minds up what way to go.
I believe that the number of the children of God is 12 Billion. That means that 4 Billion went with Lucifer. 4 Billion joined with God. And another 4 Billion sat back and did nothing but watch to see who would win the battle. Then they would decide to join the victor.
Now, to make along story short, 6 Billion souls have been born and have passed on. 6 Billion souls are alive today. It is my belief that the souls that made a stand to fight with God and the souls that went with Lucifer are part of this Earth Age we call the Second Earth Age.
Pharoh in my opinion was part of the 1/3 that went with Lucifer. God set him up as Pharoh for this period of time before the foundations of this Earth Age. God knew what this soul did in the First Earth Age and knew that he could fulfill this role. Its God's Will that is to done. Read and studing the Word. Its all there.><>

I wonder about that too. Pharaoh has no free will to obey God but God sends that plagues and kills the firstborn of Egypt. Not what we would call fair play.
There are various ways the apologists spin this but the book of Exodus very clearly and explicitly and repeatedly says that God hardened Pharaoh's heart so that Pharaoh would not let the Israelites go. This is an embarrassment to Judeo-Christianity.

According to Jewish tradition, all that God did was to make Pharaoh numb, imune to the plagues, so that he would go along with whatever he wanted to do without being "constrained" by the suffering and the pain to release the Jews. This is the explanation for the "hardening of Pharaoh's heart".
So, ultimately, it was Pharaoh's call...

God allowed the hardening of Pharaoh heart... He did not cause it nor did he make Pharaoh make a bad choice! Pharaoh still had free will, however due to his stubbornness, he chose poorly!
God had a plan, and God allows what he does so that that plan might be revealed. God plan is the "Good News". Have you heard!?

I do not believe that God has ever hardened any body's hart. That would be in conflict with his commitment to give all men they're free agency. There are many miss interpretations of words that have been switched from one language to another over many years by many hands. Every individual makes their own decision as to whether they will let Gods spirit touch they're harts and minds.

It is in saying. Pharaoh hardened his own heart because he did not want to do the right thing. You can say that God caused it, but he really had the choice to do the right thing.

To prove to Moses that God was in control and that when God makes a promise, He will keep it. Pharoh was the "puppet" God used to prove his point.

Good question. I have never heard a reasonable answer to that one.
I have suggested, however, that if god had "softened" pharoh's heart then the problem would be over, the hebrews would have been freed and at least two mass murders would have been avoided.
