They ate (assimilated or consumed knowledge) from the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Satan).
That's why God said;
Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
We all must eat (assimilate or consume knowledge) of the tree of life (Jesus Christ), to live for ever.

The Old Testament is part of the foundation of Judaism and sometimes doesn't make sense when used in Christianity. Judaism is about unquestioning obedience to authority. Jesus was persecuted by the Jews because his message was different. Genesis is about accepting the decisions of authority figures, whether just or unjust. Jesus talked about a loving and merciful god, not someone who takes a side in wars (such as with the Israelites).
So for a Christian, the story of creation is very disturbing if you try to understand and believe it. How can a god create something, while knowing the future, and punish it for doing what it was created to do? If I make a computer program that can delete all my files, is it the computer's fault for deleting the files?

it is to exercise freewill. god did not intend us to be robots. the forbidden tree is the knowledge of good and evil. satan knows how to exploit that freewill and promised eve she would be like god who can determine good from evil-- and much, much more. he was envious of god's creation, corrupted eve's sensibilities, and there started a human race capable of corruption.
had it not been of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, there would have been no bible to be written, everyone is happy and immortal...
...BUT standing now and thinking of what might have been, isn't that a boring situation? that is how corrupted our minds have become!

And creating different trees is a bad thing? There are different animals too but that doesn't mean I have to have a rhinoceros for a pet.

I doubt there were actual trees. It was probably a story that came about in a culture where literacy was not the norm, a way of preserving the warning inherent in the story with no way to write it down. You know, like before the internet.
