I started as a teen hospital volunteer. In many programs throughout the country, the minimum age is either 14 or 16. However, some hospitals may have different programs, so it is advisable to check with the hospitals in your local area. Here's a hospital directory link:

If hospitals in your area do not accept volunteers your age in their programs, you may want to consider checking with your local volunteer center for alternative organizations in the healthcare field. You can find your local volunteer center through the following links:

Your volunteer center can provide you with connections to other organizations and provide you with some one-time, short-term, or long-term opportunities.

Good luck!

I believe this would be a case-by-case situation with each hospital. When I was 15, I wanted to volunteer at the hospital in my community, but their minimum age was 16. So I was forced to wait a year, meanwhile I was able to volunteer at a local veterinarian's office, cleaning cages and what not. I think 13 might be a little young in most companies mind as the age to 'work', even as a volunteer. However, I do know that many times non-profit organizations like the Red Cross or American Heart Association take volunteers of all ages. So your best bet is to go for a non-profit group. Good luck!

I was a candy stripper when I was 13. I loved it! It was soooo cool to talk to the patients, get books for them, help them out. A rewarding experience.
