ALEX, IT'S DIFFICULT TO GIVE YOUADVISE W/O SEING YOU. IF A TOOTH IS PERMANENT AND IS DEAD, THEN THERE ARE ONLY 2 POSSIBILITIES:
1) ROOT CANAL THERAPY FOLLOWED BY A CROWN TO PROTECT THE TOOTH.
2) EXTRACTION AND REPLACEMENT WITH A BRIDGE.

IF IT'S A BABY TOOTH, EXTRACTION IS THE STANDARD PROCEDURE.

Yes,your tooth is dieing.First you gonna get a root canal. Then post and the crown. The crown is not a fake tooth,it is a cover for your existing tooth. The root canal is when they take the nerve out.

If it is intact and not abcessed (that would require a root canal) then you might try a veneer or bonding. You can have a crown done and it would not require a false tooth.

the nerve must have died for it to be turning darker.

you need to have it removed and get a false replacement.
