Well, it depends on the event you run, really.
If you run anything over or at one mile, you don't need cleets, just some regular running shoes, such as Addidas.
If you're not doing long distance and you need spikes, I'd say get bigger spikes for the closer you get to one mile. For instance, spike size small for the 100 M, and spike size medium for 200 M.
You have to remember what spikes are for in the first place, though. They are so that whenever you take a pace and your foot hits the ground, it doesn't slide around and lose your time/stride.
And Pumas. Alot of my friends use them, and they work pretty good. I've never tried them since i'm long distance, but, hope that helped!

The best thing is to go to a store that only carries running shoes and have the people there fit you for the right shoe.
If you can't do that, go to any sporting goods store and try on several different brands and styles. Keep eliminating shoes and trying on new ones until you find the one that feels the best. It won't be hard, try on two at a time and eliminate the one that doesn't feel as good. Keep doing this until you are down to one!
Remember, don't get shoes that are too tight. You should be able to put your finger between the end of your toe and the end of the shoe when you are standing up.
Good luck!

Asic is a really good running shoe brand-I currently don't wear them, but I have in the past, and am thinking about getting a pair in the next few weeks. Adidas make good ones, and they're a bit narrower if you need that. New Balance has wider shoes (I can't wear those). My favorite so far are Mizuno shoes-they're light, comfortable, and last me for about a season and a half of track and cross country. If you've got a local running store, and can afford it, go look there. The salespeople should be able to find the right shoe for your foot, regardless of brand. Good luck finding some shoes!

Unless you are very into the sport and will compete in the future, then, buy a pair of spikes. But I suggest adidas running shoes for regular training. Puma's shoes are not as good for training.

I don't like pumas. They make neat shoes but they don't have to support. If you are running track then you absolutley need spikes. Stick to the lightest and most comfortable shoe. I have gone with nike in the past, but brooks and asics are great too.

nikes are the best spikes hands down, regardless of event, they have one that workts...yes puma harambees are great distance spikes too.
for the mile/2mile go with the Milers or Lanangs,
anything above 2, buy the Eldorett II's
800/400/300h the maxcats are great and very flexible.
any other sprints: the Cellar 2's are good, and can be purchased for less than most sprint spikes, the powercats and G5's are also good.

i prefer adidas, they give good arch support. Their a wide shoe, lots of room. For track? Look into what is called a "racing flat", very light weight.

it really depends on what events you are doing. there are specific spikes for each event. its best if you get shoes for your event and i suggest nikes because i think they make like the best spike shoes.
