Go to the IRS website and do a search for Form SS-4, which is the application to get a FID.
The application is typically approved immediately if done online after the application is submitted.
If you print and fax the form to the IRS, the application is generally approved within 24 hours after it's received. You must call the IRS after 24 hours to get the FID or wait a couple of weeks to receive the FID through the mail.
