Sit-ups cause back pain. I would consult a doctor to make sure it is nothing serious. Then, after the pain heals, just do crunches. You only come up halfway. In fact, crunches are better than sit-ups. Good luck!

Firstly, situps are not an ideal exercise to lose weight. Situps build ab muscles (strength training), and the more muscle you have, the more fat you burn, but to REALLY lose weight, you should do cardio, which is the treadmill. You can lose weight with just strength training alone, but it's not as effective. But there are so many more cardio options than a treadmill ... just try dancing around to some of your favorite music if you don't have money for cardio videos or don't like to run, for example. And of course do stretch your muscles before and after any workout and make sure you're doing them properly.

You are doing them improperly. Until you can find a trainer, a teacher or a coach to show you the correct way to do them you need to stop. You can seriously hurt your back by continuing to do them wrong. And let me tell you this, when your back is injured you are down for the count. There is no walking, no running, no cardio, NOTHING until the back heals. I used a Health Rider to lose a lot of weight. You can find one now-a-days at just about any yard sale or thrift store. People paid like $500 for them & never used them but they are miracle workers and you can get one for around $20-$50. 20 mins a day is all it takes - seriously! And the best news of all is it tightens your stomach muscles AND strengthens your back muscles as well. You might could even find one online, ebay or craigslist.
EDIT: Consult with your PE teacher.

no abdominal exercise will not make you lose weight.
do various forms of crunches they are more effective at strengthening the abdominals. sit-ups bring the hip flexors into action too much and put strain on the low back.
jump rope, run sprints...
see the website below. hundreds of exercises there that you can use with or with out weights.
