I have a Chow. She has that beautiful fluffy hair, it's seems like she would never get cold. Now I am, in california and winters don't get too cold but lately it has been in the low 40's and even snowed 1 day. I don't want to be cruel, but i need to know what to do?

Dogs, especially Chows, are made to live outside. They have warm fur coats. Despite what we think sometimes I think it is cruel to inure a dog to indoors. They are descended from wolves who live outdoors all the time. They need space and Chows were bred in China, which can be very cold. Even in summer. If it gets very cold and the dog acts cold bring it into the garage, or the back porch and make a warm bed for it. I'm sure she'd prefer fresh air and room to move around in.

Do you leave the dog outside all the time? If she's not used to 40 degree weather she might get cold easily. If you moved from California to Wisconsin you would be freezing your butt of while the locals were still in shorts. It's the same for your dog. If she's used to temps over 60 degrees (or whatever the average is there) she might be better off coming in when it gets below the average.

You know personally I would bring her in out of the cold and the heat!! I know I would not like to be out there in the bad weather. Now big dogs with lots of fur like that can handle it better. The heat is worse on them than the cold (especially 40 degrees). Right now I think it is a personal preference. Dose she seem to be cold? If not she should be ok with a blanket in her dog house (make sure it is insulated).

chows have thick fur and they should be okay outside if it is fully grown (if she is old or a puppy maybe bring her inside). Make sure you have a fully insulated kennel that is raised slightly off the ground. A warm blanket would also be good. Place the kennel in a sheltered area, for instance on the varanda or under some trees away from cold wind.

Now! You should let her in the house to be with the family regardless of the weather. She can be outside - but should not have to stay out 24/7.

you can't leave any kind of dog outside in this weather. and you are wrong for not letting your dog inside the house. if it really bothers you to accept your dog as part of the family you shouldn't have a dog. but for now put the dog in the kitchen or something. you CAN'T LEAVE IT OUT SIDE that is sooo cruel!!!!!!!!

Why would you even leave her outside in the first place? Bring her in and let her be part of the family. Don't you think she deserves that?
