First off I am assuming you mean the salt put down to melt ice and snow. The reason this type of salt burns your dog's feet is because it is a corrosive. The salt uses the same corrosive properties used to melt ice to "melt" the pads on a dog paw. It's kind of like using salt to dissolve a slug, there is a reaction taking place between the salt and the flesh. You can purchase pet-safe safety melt at some pet stores and if you can't find it there try on-line at somewhere like That Fish Place/That Pet Place .com or some other pet supply distributor.

Because it has a burning soolution in it. It will burn our feet as well and porqupines love to eat salt, so they'll eat it and die.

My vet told me to rub vasaline on my dogs paws, this should keep the safety salt from burning his/her feet. You must still limit their time on the salt to a bare minimum.

Salt and other chemicals used to melt ice from streets and sidewalks can irritate your dog's paws. They are also toxic if ingested. If such chemicals are used where you walk, wash your dog's paws when you get home, or have him wear booties for walks. Consider using a nontoxic ice melter on your own walks.

You will find this same thing will happen to your skin if you handle the salt without gloves on. Salt is irritating to skin on humans and animals.

What a burn does is dehydrate the skin to where it can't recover on its own.
The salt does the same thing.
Can you get dog booties?
