When you say "holes in your gums" - I can picture any number of things that it might be. Some are fairly nasty conditions and others are absolutely fine and nothing to worry about. It would be good to know where about in your mouth they are, where about on the gum these holes are, how long have you had them and are they sore ever?
Please dont be fooled into thinking that all private dentists are good and NHS dentists are bad. I myself am an NHS dentist and regard myself to be very good indeed. I know many private dentists - some of them friends - who I wouldnt let within 10 feet of my teeth!
The NHS is designed to help patients and if you have a problem in your mouth, there is no reason why any NHS dentist couldnt help you.
Good luck

Yes. Contact any dentist in your area and ask where the nearest NHS dentist is. Good luck - it may be a long way away.
But it will be loads cheaper. I'm still on the NHS and paid £30 for a checkup, filling, and clean. My husband who goes private paid nearly £200 for the same thing.
And ignore these yanks who answered before me. What a pair of ........ extremely unhelpful people.
Maybe they're too busy in Iraq to worry about teeth.

Do your gums bleed generally or just in the area that you have toothache? If the tooth is tender to tap then you probably 90% chance have a abscess. If you have a hole in the tooth then you may have an abscess, both of which you will need antibiotics, your GP could give them to you, however this is just a temp me sure and you will need to see a dentist. If you have generalised gum bleeding then you will have the beginnings of gum disease, flossing and warm salt water will help.

holes in your gums?
I think you are referring to tooth brush abrasion, maybe.
Try using a soft toothbrush, warm water to soften bristles even more, change your scrubbing habits, try brushing the top teeth down and the bottom teeth up maybe some of the gum will grow back towards the teeth.
as far as the money issue-
try dental schools, health dept., free clinics, apply for medicaid

Here in California, we have dental schools within hospitals, such as UCLA and USC where they will fix your dental problem under the watchful supervision of quialified dentists...they charge only what you can afford and the work is wonderful....in the meantime, keep your mouth as clean as possible with water and peroxide rinses...if not taken care of soon, this could lead to problems more severe due to infections...good luck, I've had my fair share of dental problems and it's not pleasant I know.....

You don't say what part of the country you live in.....Here in Houston , we have the University of Texas Dental College. They do charge but, it is a LOT less than a regular dentist would. Are there any dental colleges in your area?

Go to your GP. They will asses whether this is a significant health risk. If so, your GP will the refer you to your local dental hospital, where you will be put on the waiting list. You will receive competent supervised treatment from final year students.
If it is an extreme emergency, go straight to the dental hospital and they will give you emergency treatment. In both cases it's free of charge! G/L!

First off, use a toothbrush with "extra soft" bristles. Colgate has them at WalMart.
