I guess it really depends on what state your friend resides? I have my children (in California) on the healthy family program and it is great! I pay $9.00 per child per month and they are fully covered. I took my daughter to the dentist and her bill was almost 1500.00. I paid nothing. Eye doctor...almost $200.00 glasses...I paid $10.00. Medical doctor...no co payment for visit and $5.00 for pharmacy.

Try the state social services office. Often a lower incom family can still qualify for medical coverage for at least the kids, if not, many states will have a listing of reasonably priced plans.

Medi-cal, you can get on that for free at your local HRA..(human resource office) I'm pretty sure all you have to do is go in and fill out an application and then they will take it from there. Good luck
