Petfinder.com is a good one. You can look for breed specific and in you local area. Plus there are a lot of private shelters that list with them that otherwise you would never know about. That is how I got my great dog about a year and a half ago.

The AKC site already mentioned is good. If you want a forum to discuss dogs do a search on dog + vBulletin or php. They are popular software for forums and should turn up forums about dogs.
