It all depends upon the experience. I started as a hospital volunteer, and I really learned a lot about the healthcare field. In fact, it helped me get one of my first jobs at the hospital, and led to a successful career in healthcare. I never really went into it for any kind of personal gain. Volunteering just happened to open additional opportunities that would never have been available to me if I hadn't done it.

Since my early years, I continued to volunteer in many different places. In fact, I currently tutor children at the local library, volunteer with teens at the local museum to teach them about the environment and earth science, and volunteer at the local children's shelter. The saying is really true -- You do get more than you give. I just spent the evening at the library with my regular group of kids. It's really all about helping others. The kids are really fun to work with, and I always enjoy sharing knowledge and experience with them. You can also learn a lot from the experience as well.

Based upon all of my volunteer work, and my passion for furthering volunteerism in the community, I was asked to join the board of directors of one of the local volunteer organizations. This volunteer job has allowed me to use my current work skills to really make a difference across the community.

If you have the opportunity to volunteer, I strongly recommend it. As I always say -- You can make a difference!

You learn to see life from the perspective of others-- always a healthy thing, whether you agree or not with those others.
Plus, you learn the joy of giving-- which is beyond description. Most people who volunteer say they get more out of it on a personal level than they give.
