Hello! I was wondering what the best method for toning lower abs is, in the case that I can't do to the gym to use fancy equipment. Now before ya'll say "crunches" or "exercise ball", I'll tell you I do somewhere between 20-60 crunches a day and that targets my upper abs. I want to work on the area beneath my navel.
Thaaanks!

there is no such thing as the "lower abs". the rectus abdominis is one muscle. muscles either contract as a whole or they do not contract at all.

localized fatigue of a muscle is not an indicator of the mechanics of that particular exercise. the abdominals contract isometrically by doing leg raises, the muscle does contract but without significant movement.

abdominal exercises will help to strengthen up the muscles but it's diet and exercise that sheds body fat. the abdominal need rest just like any other body part. to strengthen them they need only be trained 2-3x a week.

the best to target the lower abs include:
1. lying on back like a regular crunch, knees bent, and just lifting the legs up and in ..... straightening legs also adds difficulty .... you just have to keep the back from arching and to it slow and controlled
2. on back, legs straight up, crossed at ankles.. and lifting the butt up slightly ...
3. i bellydance and doing stomach rolls (contract top abs, then bottom, eventually smoothing it all out so its a roll) has REALLY helped not only tone but really be aware of what muscles are working during each exercise

Using an "Ab Lounge" exerciser would probably help. You can move your legs as well as your upper body. Get the more expensive Ab Lounger. It offers more range for body movement.

well on a exercise tape i have when i do crunches (setups) bring in your knees at the same time thats suppose to work your bottom abs also. so then both is getting a work out. or laid down and only bring your knees in.

Try Pilates - it works just about every ab muscle there is.

Crunches.... seriously. They suck to do, but I didn't buy any equipment and it worked. Then again, I do them very controlled and that way I can target what I want to work out.
