We used to buy it all the time at our local meat market, but we haven't seen it now in years. I would like to get my hands on some, but can't remember the name. It used to come in a bag, sold right by the meat, with a little lable stapled to it. Any clues would be helpful.

The store bought one was mostly herbs that you mixed with oil, if I remember properly. I have been looking at marinades you can make, but I haven't found anything similar.

Don't know about any packet with a staple and it is possible that whatever was in it that made the marinade good, was banned by the FDA. In any case, here are some things I use to marinade, and you can use common sense as to how long you want to leave it on, but I don't recommend any longer than a day or two. Sometimes, when I have more meat then I want to cook, I will freeze a portion in a zip-lock with the marinade and thaw when ready to use. No complaints and everyone is still healthy.
Go to the section of the store where they sell BBQ sauce, salad dressings, A1, Soy or Teriyaki sauce. You will see items that are also advertised as a marinade. I have successfully used Italian dressings, Soy and/or Teriyaki sauce and Honey Dijon style condiments, as well as available BBQ sauces. Buy what you like and be creative. Start new every time. Store what you don't pour and throw out what you don't use when your done to avoid cross-contamination.

A good simple marinade is worcestershire and red wine in equal parts. The longer you let it marinate, the better.

If you like a dry rub, you can never go wrong with lemon pepper, kosher salt and garlic powder. Brush it with olive oil and sear it on high heat on both sides then roast in the oven.
