Well first of all it depends on what you believe , more specifically who. There is a theory that hell was sort of "fabricated" when the Bible was translated in ancient Babylon. This was done as a way of control if you will. The Bible couldn't be all sunshine and butterflies, or else people could live doing whatever they pleased with no fear of consequences. Enter hell, and there is an ever-so-ugly alternative to the paradise promised to man by God, one that makes us live by the laws of God. There are many theories, some of them well supported, that much of the Bible has been manipulated in translation. The academic elite apparently couldn't pass up the chance to put in their two cents about what they believed to be true or should be true. A little blog you might check out if you are intested is at http://www.xanga.com/THEVOICE_1 May have to search for a while but there is a piece on hell on the site. It's well cited with it's information. Some of your answers may be there. As far as weeping and gnashing of teeth... He was just a messiah, He was more about saving humanity than being descriptive. He meant to depict a horrible place, and those are the terms He saw fitting. Hope that helps.

I'm afraid so...
there is no difference for the eternal for eternal life or eternal punishment... people do disagree about this however most (but not all) Christians historically have believed it reflects the Bible teachings
some reasons Chrstians have usually believed this includes:
Daniel said there is a resurrection of the righteous and the unrighteous, the righteous to everlasting life and the unrighteous to everlasting contempt.
hell gets thrown in the lake of fire and the language is pretty strong "the smoke of their torment goes up into the ages of the ages"
Jesus quoted a phrase from Isaiah about "their worm will not die" in the eternal state...seeming to imply people are not simply anhialated
although it is not an essential doctrine, I think the best way to look at it is the Bible teaches eternal comfort for the redeemed and eternal punishment for those not redeemed... weeping and gnashing of teethe being a picture

"Because the human soul is immortal, sin has eternal consequences.
a) All men would suffer an eternal, Hellish existence if they were made to be immortal in their present, unchanged state.
For this reason, God sent Adam out of the garden in order for Adam to learn the things of the spirit that could not be learned in paradise.
b) The same hellish earthly attitudes that cause people to become closed off from God are magnified in the stretch of eternity.
Traits such as jealousy, conceit, self-righteousness, pessimism, and hatred, which are all bearable in a mortal existence, will result in all consuming bitterness and burning misery in an endless existence. There is no need for Hell to contain black hooded sadists. Our own minds will become effective instruments of torture.
This isn't saying that the people who exhibit these tendencies now are inevitably destined for Hell, nor is it saying that those who have positive characteristics are inevitably destined for Heaven. What matters isn't so much the attributes that we display, but the state of our heart, which is displayed before God."

Depends on your beliefs.
The bible is clear- hell is described as a place of suffering and complete agony. If you believe the bible then yes, people will be horribly tortured in hell. On the other hand, others will have comfort beyond what we can comprehed in heaven. According to the bible those in heaven wont know or see the suffering in hell, but those in hell will see the people in heaven and plead for help unanswered.

People have tried to pretty up hell.
But it is a very real place, and not a party.
Day and night torment,no release from the pain.
That is why I run with the word.Praying even 1 person will hear.Hell was not created for man,but man will go there because of disobedience.<><

Weeping and gnashing of teeth. Well God's Word says that the bodies in hell will burn forever and the worm that never dies will move throughout their body forever.

The degree of punishment will be commensurate with one's sin against the light which one has received.
One good passage that indicated degrees of punishment is Luke 12:47-48: "That servant who know his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be BEATEN WITH MANY BLOWS. But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be BEATEN WITH FEW BLOWS. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked". Other verses on this issue include MAT 10:15; 16:27; Rev. 20:12,13; 22:12.
Jesus affirmed that the wicked "will go away to ETERNAL punishment, but the righteous to ETERNAL life" (Mat 25:460

Yes, there is going to be suffering. Jesus talked more about hell than He talks about heaven. I do not understand why do not people want to avoid that place..of course it is not that scary if you do not believe in it. We all are going to die, that is the fact. This time here is short compared to eternity. Hell is a real place.

The "torture" is the agony of realizing what you could have had but threw away -- perfect existence in full completeness with God. In the context of this world, imagine that you bought then threw away a lottery ticket worth $500M -- and then you had to watch, for the rest of your life, everything good and perfect that resulted for the person who picked your ticket out of the trash.
In reality, those kind of lottery tickets ruin lives, not make things great -- but humor me with the example.
