Probably not something to jump right into, but with some training you can easily do a 22 mile ride. Get some training in on the weekends until you feel comfortable riding a decent distance. When you're ready to do the commute, ride in on one of your off days so you know how long it takes. Then add another 10 or 15 minutes in case you get a flat. And carry a few spare tubes and a patch kit with you. A cell phone wouldn't be a bad idea, either. In case you have to work late, you might want to invest in a good light system. If you have a "suit & tie" job, see if you can leave some clothes at work. If there's a place to shower and change once you get there, that's even better. I've been bike commuting in the good weather for the past few years and in the summer when I don't have to get my son on the school bus, I have routes that I take in that range from 9 to 46 miles (But I have to leave REALLY early for the 46 mile route!). I've been riding in since gas went to $2.00 per gallon and now my co-workers are surprised when I don't ride in!
