Rogue waves, also known as freak waves, are relatively large and spontaneous ocean surface waves which are a threat even to large ships and ocean liners. In oceanography, they are more concisely defined as waves that are more than double the significant wave height (SWH), which is itself defined as the mean of the largest third of waves in a wave record.

A rogue wave is a wave that doe snot follow the normal pattern of waves.

It is a hot topic in maritime design, all ships are currently designed to cope with waves according to the linear wave model.

Using this method the largest wave a ship should cope with is 15m

Using radar satellites it has been shown that waves over 15m are commonly seen.

This could cause major problems are insurance companies and ship builders would then be building vessels that cannot cope with normal wave conditions

it is a wave that does not follow the rhythm of the waves either preceding it or following it, and is always inevitably larger. its one of the most dangerous kinds. it just creeps up on a person, so you always have to keep an eye out for them.
