Is coconut flavoring and extract interchangeable in recipes? Are extracts and flavoring the same thing?

For recipe purposes, yes, they are the same thing.

For the nit-picky, they can be 2 different things. Extracts mean the flavor was extracted from the actaual item. So coconut extract comes from a real coconut.

Flavoring can be made in a lab. Imitation extract, if you will. Often times it is identical chemically to what is extracted from the source, but is just made in the lab. This usually costs less than extracts.

But if you need to make something have a more coconut-ty flavor, either one will do nicely.

They are not the same, but they are interchangeable in recipes. Extract is real flavoring, but it normally has an alcohol content to it, I think the alcohol works like a preservative. Coconut flavoring is imitation coconut flavor. Normally you don't need as much extract to get a good amount of flavor in your recipe.
