I read the book The Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell and when I read the authors note and when I did re search on The Lone Woman of San Nicholas and I know maria means mary but what does jauna mean.

Pretty much "Jane". Juan is John. Juana would be the feminine. Unless I've gotten spelling wrong and it's a different word.

Juana or Juanita means Johanna, although many people translate it to Jane as well. It's the feminine form of Juan or John in English.
