I used to be the absolutely most reluctant exerciser ever. And even now I am procrastinating exercise. But right after this, I will go exercise.

The thing that gets me to do it is the fact that exercise is vitally important to our health (long term), in so many ways. It's not exactly the cure to old age, but it can help people age well. You are far from thinking about that, but if you don't start early you regret it later.

You say you are willing to work out for a year, but it's not like that. It's a life-style choice. It's a simple decision to be more active regularly, and to eat healthily consistently. To do these things regularly will take your body to a very healthy state.

To eat well, avoid refined grains (choose whole grains over whites, like with bread or pasta or rice). You can eat high protein pastas, even. Avoid unecessary sugars, if you can. Really avoid candies, and if you have any, keep it to just once piece. Because if you have more, your blood sugar goes way up, and you would hardly have a chance to use that energy - it will turn to fat. This means cutting out sodas when possible as well. Watch out for juices, and sweetened teas, coffees...

If you really want sweets, try fruit first. It will at least have nutrients, and it will be somewhat filling. Sugars do no such thing for you, and in fact it will make you want more. Look at labels of food. Avoid high fructose corn syrup!!

Avoid hydroginated oils/fats. Low fat isn't necessarily what you want... Do eat lean meats. Eat a lot of fresh vegetables. High fiber is good - it will keep you full longer, and will help keep your blood sugar levels even.

For exercises, try looking for some exercise videos that will do work cardio and strength. For well-being, strength training is really as important as anything else. Especially if you start losing weight, unless you work to maintain (and even build) your muscle, you will lose it. And losing it is bad. Muscle is metabolically active (unlike fat), and it increases the calories you use during any activities.

But the least you can do is walk a lot. After a couple weeks, speed it up. A realy good cardio workout is climbing stairs. Check out this page for a little info about planning your cardio:

Otherwise, a nice page I personally like is http://www.johnstonefitness.com
There are, however, MANY great resources out there. You do not necessarily need a gym. There are those videos, that sometimes do use equipment. But for the start you can use water bottles, cans of food, bags filled with potatoes. Ultimately, with strength training using handheld weights and your body weight, it's about gravity providing the force that your muscle is working against.

Exercise is a feel good activity, and it is adictive. Once you get started (with that walking, and then working up from there), it will get easier! The key is to get started in the first place. And you just have to make that decision to get up. Each time. Every time you want to eat something, or you have the opportunity to exercise, each chance is a chance for you to make the good or the not so good choice. Choosing to not exercise is not the end of the world. But every time you make the decision to get up and out is another positive step. Just come out positive as often as you can!

Start out slow by getting a little more exercise, and cut back (or totally out) the junk food. Don't try to diet, just try to be healthier, dieting is the best way I know of to ultimately gain weight. Start by cutting down on deep fried foods, add some veggies and cut out the soda.

Something that I have started doing is eating less processed foods(like chips and crackers and tons of white bread..even the lowfat kind is just empty calories.)and eating things like fruits, veggies, lean meats like lean steak, chicken, lean pork, tuna fish, etc and good whole grains like brown rice, whole wheat pasta and wheat bread. Good snacks are string cheese, almonds, lowfat cottage cheese, fruit, etc.

Also, strength training is a great weight to tone up as it builds muscle, which increases your metabolism and burns alot more fat. Check out www.bodyforlife.com that website has great information.
