First of all, we're having a BBQ (for 250+ ppl) after a smaller wedding since I'm getting married outdoors. My fiance's parents are paying for the reception food/drink but we're both paying for everything else. My fiance said he likes the clear plastic plates because it looks much nicer and seems more sturdier. I'm not sure if I should agree with him or just get some regular ol' paper plates. I will have centerpieces, guest favors, balloons, a space jump for kids and I'm also going to keep the wedding color scheme going, which is white/silver. The only thing that will be set apart from the wedding is the casual/jean dress (food is messy). Before I give him an answer...

My questions are: (1)Aren't clear plastic plates at weddings used as a substitute for china at an indoor reception because of the elegant look and sturdiness? (2)If I do go along with the nicer plates, will it look TOO fancy for an outdoor/casual wedding reception?

My daughter was married 2 weeks ago. Due to some catering issues we ran into we used the clear plastic plates. I was concerned about it BUT by just throwing everything away when dinner was over made it lots easier for the staff to clean up. I like the clear plates over paper plates any day. They have a nicer look/ Enjoy your day. BBQ sounds wonderful with an outdoor wedding.

no, i don't think it will be too fancy. it sounds like it will be a fun reception but you need to keep in mind that a wedding is a special event and clear plastic would be great especially with a white/silver color scheme. and they are more durable. plain ol' paper plates just don't hold up to BBQ. and if i may make a suggestion go to walmart or store similar and pick up some generic baby wipes or hand wipes to set out on the tables for the messy BBQ. you can get the travel size ones for .97cents each or less. and you need to remember that any suggestions that your future husband makes let him do it. it is his wedding too. and you are lucky most guys won't have anything to do with the wedding planning. have fun and best wishes. take care and God Bless.

The clear plastic plates are pretty sturdy, as are the heavier white paper ones, so depending on the price I would go with the more reasonable ones to save some money and maybe use the extra cash towards some heavier napkin's to help with the BBQ theme. Hope you will have pleasant weather on your special day. Congratulations and Best Wishes to You and Your Fiance'.

If you do not want the clear plastic but want the durability of them, go with the heavy paper plates like the ones Chinet makes. Those are perfect, and they're white.

Also, I loved the suggestion of baby wipes on the tables for the guests. Great idea for a BBQ

I hope this doesn't sound too rude cause that's not the way I mean it but... I don't think that you have to worry that plastic is too fancy at a wedding. With that many wedding guests, you can be sure that at least one of those paper plates will get overloaded and do the ole' bend in half and spill its contents all over the lap of your guest.

It doesn't sound like you are having a simple casual wedding, since you will have center pieces and favors. Thus, I think the clear plastic plates will add a nice touch to the wedding.

Good luck!

Actually I'd say-- try to not have any disposable items at all at your wedding. Especially not plastic.

Plastic is terrible for the environment.

You can get inexpensive ACTUAL GLASS plates that are clear or plain white from IKEA for like 25 cents each, then wash them and sell to another local bride afterwards via craigslist, or donate the plates to a community center or something.

I know it's casual but come on, it's your wedding. Eat off of real dishes!

First of all I would like to congratulate you on realizing you are just as married w/o taking out a 2nd mortgage on the house! I think you should go with with the clear plates because of sturdiness. I don't think they would be too fancy. Casual is always more fun!

1)No there not just for indoor weddings
2)No they are not to fancy for an out door wedding

He is being smart with wanting a better plate for your guests. If you are grilling or BBQ you want to have good plates so you guests will not spill on there nice clothing
