My wife and I got married in June of 2006 we are both in the military... the same rank. I was in a tax free zone for some time this year. She made more money than I did this year. She is a CA resident and I am an Ohio resident should we file Married Filing Seperatly or Married Filing Jointly?

Do you and your wife live together right now? Because here is the problem when you file your return you will BOTH need to sign papers to file and to pick up your check if you do any kind of bank product. Your refund would be larger filing joint but if she isn't there with you you may run into a problem. If you have any questions just email me.

check with a tax person. But usually filing jointly is less of a tax situation. But that said, every situation is different so it must be checked out with someone who understands different situations. My husband last year did both ways before we did our final submission since he does it on Quicken. If you do Quicken, you can run the numbers, and you can see which way is better.

in maximum situations, MFJ is the terrific. although if your earning are comparable and you the two take the customary deduction and haven't any babies there is little if any difference between MFJ and MFS. in maximum situations the place babies are in touch you will do greater powerful submitting MFJ. it extremely is somewhat genuine if your earning are modest as you lose the EIC in case you record MFS. On uncommon events MFS could be greater powerful, including if one important different has an extremely severe earnings and the different has a low earnings and the single with the low earnings has strangely severe itemized deductions undertaking to earnings limits including medical costs (7.5% of AGI) or particular 2% miscellaneous itemized deductions. If there is any doubt, artwork it up the two procedures and choose for whichever way outcomes interior the backside total internet tax criminal duty between you.

I honestly don't know, however, if you are still in the military there should be a tax service on base for those in the service. Ask around.

Ask your tax person what they recommend in order to maximize your refund (or minimize what you pay) It depends on your deductions and salaries
