Biological plants are based on the use of micro-organisms and bacteria that feed on the waste materials. See the references for pictures and how they work. There are smaller versions that are called "constructed wetlands" that use plant materials along with the bacteria. See the last reference for those. A web search will find you much more material.

The most common biogical treatment method for sewage is called the "activated sludge" process. First, the heavy solids are removed from domestic wastewater, then the sewage is mixed with bacterial biomass called sludge in a tank and is aerated. Wastewater is drawn out of the tank and allowed to settle in a clarifier, and that produces the sludge, some of which is recycled back into the first treatment tank. In this activated sludge process, the bacteria break down the complex molecules (like urea, polysacharides, and proteins) into simpler compounts (like nitrate and carbon dioxide and water).
