Is this somewhat true?

Of course severe depression causing Hospitalization is a another matter.

It is not recommended to treat mild depression with medication at all, psychotherapy should be tried first.
Studies on combination of meds and therapy vs one of them alone have produced different results - most agree that therapy alone for severe depression is not sufficient but it is not clear if there is a clinically significant difference between meds alone vs the combination of the two.
I think therapy plays a large role in relapse prevention as you can learn coping strategies to deal with first onset of possible depression relapse.

It all depends on what the doctor or therapist thinks is best. A lot of times people with severe clinical depression will have a combination of treatments, including medication, behavioral and/or cognitive therapy. But even with mild or moderate depression people can have this combination of treatments too.
