The Quaran is often quoted to justify Islamic acts of violence... but couldn't a christian do the same if they wanted to? What are some of the bible verses that describe when violence is appropriate? Where in the Quar'an does it say that killing civilians is ok?

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I would really like to know which scriptures people use to rationalize violent behavior.

Let's clarify... instead of violence, let's use the word aggression.

Islaam is a religion of peace and submission and stresses the sanctity of human life. A verse in the Quran says (Chapter 5, verse 32), that anyone who saves one life, it is as if he has saved the whole of mankind and anyone who has killed another person except (in lieu of murder or mischief on earth), it is as if he has killed the whole mankind." Islaam condemns all violence which happened in the Crusades, in Spain, in the 2nd world war, or by acts of people like the Rev. Jim Jones, David Koresh, Dr. Baruch Goldstein, or the atrocities committed in Bosnia by the Christian Serbs. Anyone who resorts to violence is not practicing his religion at that time. However, sometimes violence is a human response of oppressed people as in Palestine. There is a lot of terrorism and violence in areas where there is no Muslim presence. For example, in Ireland, South Africa, Latin America, and Sri Lanka. Sometimes violence is due to a struggle between those who have and those who do not have, or between those who are oppressed with those who are oppressors. Unfortunately, the Palestinians who are struggling against oppression are called terrorists but not the armed Israeli settlers when they do the same. As it turned out in the Oklahoma City bombing, sometime Muslims are prematurely blamed even if the terrorism is committed by non-Muslims. God does permit defensive wars against organized oppression. Sometimes some misguided Muslims turn to violence as happens with all religions and countries of the world. To call all Muslims terrorists is completely false. Islaam is a religion of peace, harmony and submission to the laws of God Almighty.

When looking at the Bible a person will see a Vengeful God in the Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament), while the New Testament shows Jesus preaching Love your enemy, and such...

However I feel that there is some power higher than us, and forces working outside of our human bodies. So I guess in short, I think there is a God/Source/Intention whatever name suites you.

But I believe that religion can be used or distorted to suit the needs of anyone.

So if a person looks hard enough or misreads (like radicals) any document Qua ran or the Bible, they will find what they need to cause harm.

The Vatican2 does sanction a notion known as "Just War"

If you want verses you can narrow it down to the Old Testament (Hebrew Scriptures) and the Vatican2 documents.

More blood has been spilled over our lifetime and those before us, in the name "God"

There is an old saying "God is God, and Religion screws it up"

Enjoy

no the Quran cannot justify violence unless that violence is done in self-defense. the verses that are quoted to "prove" the Quran supports killing of non-muslims deal with historical events. reading any verse in context (historically also) will disprove this myth. many non-muslims argue that that is just another interpretation and argue against it but there are other verses in the Quran that contradict this idea of "death to the infedels." they instead tell you to live in peace when you can (ex: surah 60:08) and praise forgiveness. a matyr is someone who dies to save his people, not one who dies killing another innocent. those people who justify their acts of terrorism using the Quran are the ones corrupting the image of islam and turning the world against it. they are not saving anyone but starting a war for nothing.

I'll answer as many of your questions as I can. Yes, the Bible says men who lie with men will not inherit the Kingdom - that is true. Why doesn't it specifically say women - it is implied. Just like now when people say things like - Why does MANkind do these types of things? It is just implied that women are included. That being said - it doesn't justify "homophopia" tactics that are used to beat, kill, etc gay people. Yes, adultery and fornication are abhorred by God as well too - God does not tolerate that. It is TODAY's society that has accepted them - those that practice these will be punished by God at Judgement Day. So according to the Bible, God abhorrs adultery, fornication and homosexuality - as well as beastiality (having sex with an animal). However, it does not give anyone the right to beat up or kill a person who is gay - we also must not judge anyone ourselves - for God is the only true judge, which is correct. If God abhors people who are gay, and they practice it, then they also will be punished by God at Judgement Day, if he sees fit to punish them. It is not my right or anyone else's right to "punish" anyone for any of the sins they have committed. However, I DO follow the Bible and I don't AGREE with gay rights - I don't think that you should be gay, and I would not support anyone who is gay. I am not bashing them, I will not hit them, I will not try to get them fired if there are any working in my office, I just do not think that their way is right as I believe that God abhors them Himself. I resent that they are pushing gay rights on us and teaching our children in schools that it is ok to be gay. Some gay people are so forceful in pushing their views on us, that they are heterophobic - it is starting to become now that it is weird if you are NOT gay. That is wrong.

Just about anything could be used to justify violence, if someone wants to find a way to justify it. That doesn't mean the source quoted in reality condones violence.

There is no verse in the Bible, taken in context, that urges or allows Christians to be violent - quite the opposite! The new testament emphasize repetitively to be peaceful, loving, forgiving, self-controlled. There are places in the old testament where God ordered Israel's armies to go to war against wicked neighboring nations. The Bible records this as a matter of history, but does not imply a general, standing approval of violence, and even if someone were to misunderstand in this way, many other parts of the Bible make clear this is not God's desire or expectation for us.

The Qu'ran on the other hand, authorizes and orders Muslims NUMEROUS times to fight and kill non-Muslims. To give just a few examples:

Excerpt K 4:074-077
Set 15, Count 38-41 [4.74] Therefore let those fight in the way of Allah, who sell this world's life for the hereafter; and whoever fights in the way of Allah, then be he slain or be he victorious, We shall grant him a mighty reward. [4.75] ...fight in the way of Allah... [4.76] Those who believe fight in the way of Allah, and those who disbelieve fight in the way of the Satan. Fight therefore against the friends of the Satan... [4.77] ...when fighting is prescribed for them...Our Lord! why hast Thou ordained fighting for us?...

Excerpt K 9:029
Set 38, Count 101 Fight those who do not believe in Allah...nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection.

Excerpt K 47:004
Set 69, Count 136 ...when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, then smite the necks until when you have overcome them, then make (them) prisoners, and afterwards either set them free as a favor or let them ransom (themselves) until the war terminates...(as for) those who are slain in the way of Allah...

it really doesn't matter which versus are used in either book to justify violence--man will always be able to justify violence, like the guy who steals your chain because you 'were too stupid to protect it.' Same with religion, except it's often about land. . . holy land, no less.

There need not be any verse especially written, saying kill others.
The writings in quran and christianity, that non-believers are sinners, and they will burn in hell, your god is only savior, please him,
when repeated every where in holy books, it is enough for huge voilence.
Only humanity and little non-belief has saved christians from doing more voilence in the past and present.

oi...acts of defense arent considered violence.

edit: unless they go overboard.

edit 2: things go terribly wrong when you need to kiss upto a living breathing man in order to survive in the afterlife...lots of islamic preachers do that...only idiots listen.

Only if you take it out of context.

Other wise the Qur'an doesn't say that.
