Is there a situation where people leave and block out other people, like parents, suggnificant others, etc as a trend?

If I understand your question correctly, yes, there are medical reasons for people to leave or withdraw from their jobs, friends and family. Depression is the main reason. Sometimes, discovering they have a terminal or progressive disease will also cause people to isolate themselves from others. This is part of the grieving/acceptance process.

Most who withdraw, will come back after they have had time to adjust or adapt to the news. The one cause to really worry about is depression since withdrawing can often signify the decision to commit suicide.

This is not a trend though so I am not sure what you mean by that. This is a step in a process of coping.
