Remove the crusts from bread slices and butter. Put your first layer in butter side DOWN [butter onto dish] You can if you wish spread a layer of jam or sprinkle sultanas/raisins in next
Then another layer of bread butter side UP.
Beat 4-6 eggs in a bowl add 500mls of milk pour over the top
Sprinkle with brown sugar, leave in the fridge till ready to cook
cook 180 degs c till set

Bread and Butter Pudding
5 slices bread
butter, to apply to the bread
2 cups milk
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1/2 cup raisins
1 cup hot water
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Soak the raisins in the boiling water.
Butter the bread slices and cut them diagonally.
Arrange them in a baking dish (greased lightly or non stick).
Beat the eggs lightly in a bowl.
Bring the milk and sugar in a vessel to boiling point.
When it reaches this point take off the fire and add the vanilla essence.
Add the hot milk mixture slowly to the beaten egg.
Stir continuously till the egg is incorporated and the mixture thickens.
Sprinkle the raisins over the bread slices and in between them too.
Pour the custard over the milk and put the baking dish into the hot oven.
Bake for 25 mins or till tester comes out clean.
Sprinkle cinnamon powder over it when still hot.
Serve hot or warm or even cold.

BREAD AND BUTTER PUDDING

4 tbsp. butter, softened
12 slices firm bread
3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
3 c. milk
1/3 c. sugar
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
4 eggs

EARLY IN DAY:

Grease 8 x 8 baking dish. Spread butter on bread slices. Arrange 4 slices of bread in dish in one layer, overlapping slightly if necessary; sprinkle lightly with 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Repeat, making two more layers. In medium bowl with fork, beat milk, sugar, vanilla, salt, and eggs until well mixed. Pour egg mixture over bread slices. Bake in 325 degrees for 55 to 60 minutes until knife inserted in center of pudding comes out clean. Serve pudding warm or refrigerate to serve cold later.
