a triangle for a side view?
It is a common solid object you see everyday.
(I used this question when I devised the first Mensa test in San Francisco Bay Area. --- To this date, no one has ever answered it successfully on an IQ test (fill in, not multiple choice).

"nexus" - a regular cup does not have a triangular side view. - Remember it is a solid object that you see every day. Anything not normally seen, ie anything exotic or strange would not been seen every day - so to say

Padwin- good guess but a regular coffee filter would not be square from the front view, and if it were, then it would not be circular from top view, and if it is a flexible filter then it is not a "solid" object. Plus the average person does not see a coffee filter everyday.

leeharvey - great guess. But the average person doesn't see such a thing everyday.
But you have already done better than the Mensa candidates- they all said "impossible". PS: yes it has a regular name. you have said this word hundreds of times.

"Lee" - yes the shape is right enough. I am proud that you didn't say the shape was impossible. Now it needs to be a solid object that you see everyday.

"flip" - If you go to my original posting of this question, you will see all the previous guesses that were wrong and why they missed the criteria. However, the tube of toothpaste was a damn good guess. except for the cap, and of course anything that is flexible to the point of changing shape (without breaking) is not "solid". Plus some people use canned toothpaste. or even powders for us old folks.

"Kelley" - when you discover it, bells will ring, and you will not need me to confirm it . It will be that clear to you. - When someone guesses it, I will post it on my original posting of this puzzle(question)
See instructions above to find my original posting. (this question was prompted by a person asking for peoples IQ, when everyone said they were 138-160, I challenged them with this old Mensa Puzzle.

"kelley" - you must have one weird thumb. If you think it looks triangular from the side. How short is your thumb? Oh well, the average person is not going to see your thumb every day (even if your thumb is weird, their's probably isn't). - but great imagination.

Is there a real name for it? I've seen it as a cup for some types of ice cream treats. Take a piece of paper, and roll it into a cylinder. Staple or fold the sides together at the bottom so they form a flat edge. Viewed from the top (the open end), it will appear as a circle. From the front, it will appear as a rectangle (might need to fold the sides in a bit to make it perfect), and from the side, it will appear as a triangle.
Follow-up: I missed the part about being a solid object the first time around. Do I have the basic shape right? I can envision it as a solid object, but can't think of any everyday objects with that shape, unless you eat a lot of sno-cones.

It has to be in the form of a solid round headed wedge, although possibly with the round head on the bottom, which would appear round from a top view. It could be a common food item, but not common in my house. It may be some form of chisel that I'm also not familiar with. It could be a tube of gel, or oil paint, but those are not solid as much as they are filled objects. There is clearly deception in this question and it's thus more of a trick question or riddle than one requiring analytical ability to solve.

FINAL ANSWER, unless I think of something: If all the shapes don't have to be "perfect", it's a funnel with a flat dimension. Like the above coffee filter answer. But I can't think of very many things with that shape.

I have a bottle of soap in a similar shape, but it is not necessarily solid. A rock could theoretically be in that shape, but not all rocks are. It could be a shadow, but they are not solid. So many possibilities...
Is this something that everybody sees everyday?
