Long layers are nice since it gives many styling options. You can get it done so that it maintains the bulk of the hair - in other words - it need not "thin" it. It will give more bounce to the hair when you style it and it should hold better. Just get a good styling mousse which lends volume.
Get the best stylist you can afford, I find that the haircut is the MOST important of all. My stylist can cut hair like nobody's business and I have been going to her for years. Communicate clearly with her/him to be sure they understand how much you want off and what you want to stay.
Go to the store and find a magazine I think it's called Sophisticates Hair Style or something like that. It has tons of great pics and find one you like. Then choose your stylist VERY carefully.
Here is a pic of a style you might like which is not too short:

And check this out:

Also, try to keep your bangs longer such as to the bottoms of your cheekbones bc you don't want them too short unless you really like it that way.

layers just make your hair look longer than what it is. I have layers had them since i was in middle school. Yea big change huh. But now i don't want them. This is something u should decide, because it's getting your hair cut. But don't get me wrong layers are cute and of your hair is that long then i'll look great on u.

layers are great for everyone (I have thin hair and I have them)
for people with thin hair it helps give it a thicker look and with thick hair it helps thin it out.....it just depends on how drastic you want to go (like with rachel on friends in the first couple of seasons she had it layeredd very drasticly) if you don't know what you will look like and are worryed about looking dumb I suggest you get them layered enough so where you can tell it;s layered but not to much

Yes, but if your hair is thin, make sure you get light layers. I also like long layers, I think they are the best.

You should get little bit of layers...
Depends if your hair is thin or thick
I have thin hair soooo I wouldn't do it
I tried and I look UGLY! But now I have a trim so it's better
Also you can curl your hair and make pretty layers with it!

I have layers in my hair and it's a little shorter than yours. My hairdresser gives me layers to make my hair look fuller and it gives it some texture and a nice style.

don't do it when you get split ends it looks shocking coz they go all the way up and you can't just trim the ends off it's a whole new do.
looks good to start with then soon becomes a real pain and takes so long to grow out
