If he has a good quality of life and is moblie enough that he does not have to lay in his urine or feces all the time, then, yeah, hang on to your bud as long as you can! i have found that my dogs have always let me know when it is time and they would rather wait for me at the bridge...
don't let anyone tell you that you are throwing away money on an old dog. Uncoditional love is priceless!
Blessings and I hope your pup has a swift and smooth recovery- dd

Personally I would go ahead with the surgery and see how he does with that. As long as he can have a somewhat normal life without constant pain or anything like that, then I would say it is too soon to consider putting him down. Especially because you said he is full of energy. If he gets to the point where he can barely walk around and seems depressed then I would reconsider.

Wow, poor pup!
I assume you are asking if it is time to euthanize? It doesn't sound like it. If he is active, eating and drinking well, his diabetes is well-controlled, and he seems free of pain, then by all means enjoy his company as long as possible.
It is the most difficult decision you will ever make. But, when the time comes, you will know. When your pup doesn't want to move around much, he doesn't want to eat, he seems like he's in pain, then you may wish to give him a peaceful end. Euthanasia means 'good death' and it is a precious gift that we can give to our animal companions.

you are the one to figure that out. but are you in a position to care for a handicap dog? it is all base on your love for your pet. if it is doing fine then what is the problem. if you do not want the responsibilities of caring for it then you have a answer already. and that is yours to make. when to know the right time to put a pet to sleep is a subject that you should study up on and then go from there. l hope love wins.

It's up to you to decide. You could go ahead and have the surgery, and try to rehabilitate the dog. He sounds like a great pooch!
But the day your dog is in too much pain and isn't having fun any more, it's time to let him go.
Good luck!

As long as the dog can function relatively well (eat, poop, pee normally; get around relatively easily, etc.) and is not in chronic pain, enjoy him for as long as you can.
If he deteriorates to the point where he has no "quality" of life and/or is in a lot of pain all the time, then it may be time to consider euthanasia.

Apart from tying us down, domestic animals are the best friends. If you can afford to pay for his operations as the woman above says then he is worth keeping alive. If in doubt, see your vet.

If he is full of energy and love...and not in pain, by all means keep him here. When it's time...you will KNOW...you won't need to question.

If you care for this animal enough to pay for surgery for him, you've already answered your own question. Just keep on lovin' him. Good luck!
