No - someone who admits to being a former drug addict is not going to make it through the background investigation.

Yes, someone that has been addicted to drugs be a police officer. That does not stop them.

However, what does usually stop them from doing it is certain departments do drug testing and polygraph tests to find out info on past of the applicants.

The only real thing that stops previous drug addicst from becoming police officers, is if they were convicted of some sort of drug charge. Usually it will have to be a felony charge that will automatically disqualify them from joining the force. If it is a misdemeanor, then they usually have to wait a year or two after they are off probation or whatever they are placed on, then they will be eligible to become a police officer.

For a really good answer you will need to look at the requirments of your state's law enforcement governing body, and also the requirements and disqualifiers from several departments in your area.

Most police departments will not allow any type of drug use past or present. This is based on the repeat rate of approx. 85% specialty people that were actually addicted. Any one can pee clean after a term of abstinence. being clean does not make you cured. I know for a fact that my department would not even allow experimentation with pot, As it should be. I you want to be a cop you prepare for it I does not mean you are perfect, but you certainly do not intentionaly use drugs.

i'm a probation officer and for as long as i have worked in the system i know for a fact that as long as u don't have any convictions, open cases and u can pass a drug test u can be a police officer... it just really depends on the city u work for.. most jurisdictions don't care if ur a past user as long as u can pass the drug tests and dno't have any past convictions..
