I am 54 years old. I live in a city that is MOSTLY people my age, and older. MOST of these people are in various levels of weakness and sickness. To look at them, especially when our young people look at them (my son included), is terrifying! This is growing old?
But then I took him to see a man who was promoted as the "strongest man in the world." He was 59! I show my son on the internet a man named Jack LaLane. He is a 90 year old weightlifter.
And so on, and so on.
I exercise every day. So I am in great shape.
But everyone around me keep getting older and weaker.
They will not exercise, they have only excuses.
It makes me wonder why? If exercise will keep you healthy and strong as you grow older, why do you refuse to exercise?
They just will not. And they get weaker and weaker...

Because they've always had excuses and someone always let them off the hook. They have learned to get attention by complaining about what is medically wrong with them, and guess what? People DO give them attention, because they don't want to be impolite.
All you can do is let them live their lives the way they want to and YOU be a good role model for all the kids coming up after you. You sound like a good man.
Take care.

How do you feel about Philosophy? The thing is, it sounds like maybe you are somewhat smarter than most of the people you've been around in the past. Maybe 'the social life' thing isn't the thing for you. That doesn't mean don't try to make friends; everybody needs like minded people in their lives. Just remember that you've got your whole life to make friends, and you'll be truly lucky if you can find five that you can trust entirely; so to spend a few more years wrapped up in learning all that you can will not be a waste of time for you. And it will be informative. And you will be surrounded by like minded people. You'll find yourself; then you'll find your best friends. Good Luck

Sometimes you get sick and the great gurus of medicine our Doctors give you drugs that destroy you! They hand out steroids like candy and there goes your immune system, your bone density, muscle and skeletal pain, your vision, it's deadly. Just the inhalers even, if they have steroid, your gonna put on the pounds! Advair is the worst!! I was always athletic and fit, now I'm struggling to get back! Don't be to sure of yourself, you haven't walked in other peoples shoes. And tell your son, we all will bloom and then begin to fade it is the cycle of life, don't live in a fantasy so he can be shocked when your time comes. And it will, and your vitality will wane and your body will disappoint you. So Judge not.

Its not just exercise that keeps us young. Its ACTIVITY. Any kind of activity keeps the mind sharp, and gives the body a reason to go on.

I agree, you have to keep your joints working so you don't get stiff. Also, a lot of the afflictions of older age comes from damage done when you are young, (and thought nothing could stop you !)

I think that it is part of the social system set up in this country, you are told that as you grow older you should slow down and enjoy life more, this is what people do not realizing that they are jeopardizing their health in doing so.

that's because the older we get, things begin to slow down, including our cells which keeps us healthy. Everything begins to break down.

It's cyclical. You stop doing exercise and it makes you have less energy which makes you not want to exercise.
