I am naturally a dark ash/dirty blonde. Every time I try to dye my hair to a light platinum it turns orange. Why isn't my hair turning yellow/light blonde? I have been using the over the counter dyes.

That is because you are not using a quality hair color. There are some people whose hair responds to regular blonde hair color better than others. Some people get more effective results when they bleach their hair. You are the bleaching type. If you want to go platnium blonde what I would suggest that you use a quality bleach. What i would suggest is the L'Oreal Feria Bleach Blonding, Lightening Kit #200 . But before you start the bleaching process don't wash your hair for a couples of days before bleaching just to prepare your hair for bleaching. Your hair needs all its natural oils for bleaching. Then remove any present hair color in your hair by using a hair color remover. I personally reccomend the Loreal Color Zap. Your hair will be ready for recoloring in no time. Since your hair has the tendency to turn orange you gotta do the double process bleach blonding. The results from bleaching can range from a pale yellow to a rusty orange without the toner. But the toner guarantees your hair will be a light blonde without the unwanted brassiness. After bleaching just use a quality toner and you will be fine. To take care of your bleached hair use mayonnasie on your hair. I know it sounds crazy but Beyonce uses mayonnaise on her hair to give it that extra kick. Not only mayonaise makes your hair shiny but it will also add essential nutrients to your hair lost during bleaching. Just wash and rinse. After use a leave in conditioner for your hair to be even more healthier. With these tips you and your hair will look fab and glam! You will be a platinum blonde in no time. Because You're worth it.

Babe, This has happened to me so many times. I have dark brown hair and I wanted a white blonde haircolor. After my first attempt I got a brassy orange color. That is because your hair goes through stages as it changes color. Brown in the darkest and Blonde is the lightest so if you don't get a good quality hair dye it will leave you with a brassy color, and in return that is the hardest part of your hair to then to redye. Sometimes you need to leave the color application on longer, or you may have to reapply up to 5 times to get the colored desired. To save heartache you should go to a salon to get it done. In the long run the quality of a salon application compared to store will be worth the money. Blondor is the best lightener out there.

When you put bleach on your hair it goes red and orange before it goes blonde, so I would assume it's because you're not leaving it on long enough.
It should be fine for you to leave it on longer than the time in the instructions if it's not lifting it enough.
In hair salons they leave it on for as long as it needs leaving on to lift.
If you have dyed your hair before, even if it's faded, the bleach may be having trouble lifting the colour from the ends of your hair.
Or it might just not take to your hair very well depending on your hair type.
Just keep checking the colour of your hair while it's developing by wiping away a bit of the dye so you can see your actual hair underneath, and when it's blonde enough, rinse it out.
If it really doesn't work and you've tried all the best brands then you'd probably be best going to a hairdressers.

This is very common.. it happens to me whether i get it done professionally or not (every time i've had my hair done professionally, it has been TERRIBLE). One thing you want to look for is that you're getting a cool shade as opposed to a warm one. Cool shades contain fewer red dyes and are less likely to make your hair brassy. Go with colors that say "ash" in the title. Also, avoid colors that use metallic dyes, such as Feria.

One thing you may need to look into is getting a toner for it. I would go to a store like Sally's, and talk to one of the workers there. Also, check the box of the hair color you used. If there's a hotline, call it--they are very helpful and may be able to assist you in a color correction (this sometimes requires using 2 different colors and following different instructions, so be prepared with pen and paper!)

Good luck! and remember--nothing looks better than your natural color. =)

when i want to get a red shade in my natural brown hair,I have to use an ash blonde color. You may be using the wrong color to get what you actually want. If you can, try getting the dye at a shop that only specializes in beauty products.Employees there should be able to help you. Good Luck

It's because you've been using over the counter stuff. Go to a salon. Box color is extremly unpredictable and most people dont truly understand what undertones and in warmth, ash, natural ash and so forth are.

if you have blonde hair this will naturally get bleached by the actual sun in the summer. There had been this guy in my class who also had golden blonde hair that had been a medium brown near the bottom part. When he came back to university after summer vacation, it was practically platinum blonde!
