If there was no birth certificate issued for the child, then there cannot be a dependency exemption. However, a child who lived for only a brief time can be claimed as a dependent.

For a child who was born and died in 2006 and has no SSN, attach a copy of the child's birth certificate to the return. Enter "DIED" in column (2) of line 6c of Form 1040 or 1040A, where the Social Security number is listed.

You will have to mail in such a return.

No, sorry. Even if you could, you would've had to wait til January 2008 to file for the 2007 tax year.
If the baby was born and only survived for 20 minutes, that would qualify for tax credits. You would just need to send a copy of the birth certificate and write "deceased" on the forms. No social security number would be needed.

First of all, I am very sorry for your loss.

Secondly, a baby has to be born alive (even if only for a moment) in order to be claimed as a dependent. If a baby was born stillborn, the parents would not be able to claim him/her. If the baby was born alive and died shortly thereafter, the parents could claim him/her for the full year.

If the baby was born alive and lived at all even for one minute after being born, then yes you can. For a miscarriage or a stillbirth, no.

Sorry for your loss. Good luck in the future.

As tragic as your loss was, the IRS only allows exemptions for live births.
