What are you doing with a four week old puppy? No reputable breeder would have given you a puppy that young. No puppy should be taken away from it's mother until at least 8 weeks. Take the puppy back to the breeder and let him be with his mother.

A responsible breeder makes sure that every single puppy goes to an owner who will provide it with the same love and devotion for life that the breeder has provided for the first eight or ten weeks. This means careful screening and evaluation of each person or family interested in getting a puppy.

Owning a dog is not just a privilege-it's a responsibility. These animals depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. If you are considering taking a dog into your life, you need to think seriously about the commitment that dog ownership entails. If you already have a dog, you need to consider if you are fulfilling all your obligations as its owner.

You should not have gotten the pup. At such a young age. But that is already done. Go to a feed store. Ask for grade AA pup milk. Feed the milk to the pup 3 to 4 times a day. At 7 weeks, stared in on wet food. But dont take the milk away. Intill the pup is eatting wet food, and drinking water on it own. Than about week 8. Mix dry food in with the wet. Slowly take the wet food a way. ---Good Luck---

1st of all, a puppy should stay with it's mother until 8 weeks of age. He needs alot more calories and nutrition than milk and puppy food. He should be fed milk replacer only--you can purchase this at any pet store--for at least the next 2 weeks. Then mix puppy food with the replacer for 1-2 more weeks than he can eat plain puppy food. Milk that we drink is nutritionally useless to animals and can give them upset stomachs.

At four weeks old, the puppy's bowels aren't developed enough to eat a lot of solid food, so be careful what you feed it. No hard kibble yet.

When we have pups this young we feed them raw hamburger (because it's easy for the pups to suck up and digest) and rice pablum (baby cereal) mixed with puppy formula. If you're worried about bacteria in the meat, roll it into little meatballs and then freeze it overnight to kill bacteria. Thaw the meat in the microwave and then feed one meatball to the pup in the morning and in the evening.

Puppies this young still need mother's milk -- so you're going to have to get some puppy formula and make sure the pup gets enough of it. You can call your vet and ask how much to feed the pup and how often.

You can go to the vet's office and get Mother's Replacement milk.Get a nursing nipple (little hole), place in palm of your hand head elevated, and Little at a time. Make sure puppy stays warm, and after every feeding, if required, stimulate for urination and bowl movements. Feeding this puppy is a full time job, that's why it should still be with it's mother. If you can't return the puppy and you find this too difficult try contacting a local vet's office we had a girl that loved to do that sort of thing. Best of luck!

at this point the dog should still be with it's mother; is this not possible? if not, i would say milk is about all they should have. maybe in week 6 offer puppy food, moistened up a little but by 8 weeks they should be ready to eat straight dried food.

A puppy that young still need milk from its mother. My law puppies cannot be sold until they are 8 weeks old. Take it back to where ever you got it.

It is against the law to have a puppy this young. A responsible breeder would NOT have allowed a puppy to go to a home this young. I strongly recommend that you take him back for at least another 3-4 weeks to be with mom and littermates. he still needs to be nursing from mom.
****it is against the law to buy, sell, adopt or give away a puppy that has not completed it's 7th week and in some places 8 weeks******

You should really take your puppy back to where you originally got him and have him weaned off his mother properly and turned onto dog food.

Most states do not allow the "sale" of a dog to be done until the puppy is at least 8 weeks of age.

If you are unable to take your puppy back then you need to feed him the correct formulas for dogs. Do not feed a dog cow milk. You need to go to the pet store and purchase puppy formula and feed him that and slowly wean him off of that onto dog food.

You can purchase formula for puppies at any pet store. Here is a link so you can get an idea:

Here are some correct directions provided by the AKC on how to wean puppies and how to feed them at that age. Good Luck.

"Most puppies begin the weaning process at about three weeks of age. You can start them off by offering a pan of formula in place of their mother's milk. Next, replace the formula with a combination of thin cereal and formula. Hand-fed puppies may be removed from the bottle, and meat or high quality canned dog food may be offered in addition to the cereal/formula mixture.

At five weeks, delete the cereal and replace the formula with a solution of equal parts evaporated milk and water. A high-quality dry puppy food can be mixed into the meat and canned food.

To avoid digestive upsets, be sure to introduce all changes in food or feeding schedules gradually. "
