Christianity and Buddhism only differs in philosophy and theology. The practice of closing one's eyes and going inward for the truth has been the foundation of the two teachings. When people pray to Jesus or God, what do they pray for? Most people pray for good fortune and wealth. That's all good and well and sometimes your prayers will be answered. But If you pray for the welfare of other people, the whole world, the whole universe with all your heart, that's Metta meditation. Buddhist use the breath as their common meditation object. You can use God as your meditation object. Many christian mystics has seen enlightenment through deep prayers and focused attention to that ONE object in their prayers. They focus on God, and keep focusing on God, until their mind settles down. Until the feeling of energy and rapture fills their body which they call it the initiation to God. They turn their attention away from the concept of God to that feeling of the rapture of God. The feeling of rapture then dies down to a calm joyful feeling that's like the love of God. They turn their attention to that now. The emotional happiness that God provides for them. Then the feeling of contentment and satisfaction arises that is like the fulfillment of God, like He has taken care of everything for you and for once, you are not burdened by anything, just in the warmth of HIS presence. Then you let go of everything that is YOU and fall with trust that GOD will catch you and you descend and descend until you come to a stop and you become ONE with GOD. All worldy matters are subsided and there is only GOD, no you, no mind, no body, no world, no universe, just GOD! Emerging from these experiences, the christian mystics develop the ability to gain insight into all things and slowly transform their lives from ordinary to the Sainthood.
Anyways, i've just described the 4 jhanas for you (in christian terms)..lol
But don't feel like moving away from God means you're growing up or staying with God means you're childish. Believe me, there are many people who don't depend on god and are more evil and deluded than many christians.
There's nothing wrong with the belief in God, or devotion to God. What's wrong is what people do in accordance to it, via Kill in his name, use God or the devil as a scapegoat for their sufferings, use God to create fear for other people, condemn other people for not believing in God.
If believing in God can make you a kinder person, make you more generous, make you less materialistic and more in tune with your inner being, make you less judgemental, and make you be honest with yourself, then I don't see anything wrong with it.
In fact, i agree with Jesus when he said, "You cannot serve 2 masters, God or the worldly life".
Hence, if you go with God, then GO WITH GOD! but do it whole-heartedly! Don't blend god with money, fame, love, etc. When people do that, that's why christianity gets corrupted.

For the Buddhist, a strong belief in The Buddha is not a prerequisite for attaining Nibbana.
For the christian a strong belief, along with a single-minded walk with God(not doubleminded, or a lukewarm walk with God) IS absolutely necessary to obtain the christian Heaven.
For the Buddhist, he simply lives his life according to the Four Noble Truths, and the Eightfold Path. He views The Buddha with respect, and his teachings with high regard.
He has no belief in a creator God. For he knows that the God-Concept is based on fear. If a christian, a jew, a muslim, etc. does not believe exactly how his faith teaches concerning believing in God, YHWH, ALLAH, and is a Lukewarm hypocrite, he fears the eternal suffering in a Lake of Fire.
The Buddhist knows that through his Kamma, which simply means actions, he will probably go to one of the Heavens of Buddhism, or possibly one of the Hells of Buddhism, but the time there is not eternal, as is the Heaven or Hell for the christian, jew, and the muslim.
The Buddhist knows that he has stored up for himself only enough to keep him in his heaven(s), or hell(s) for only a certain amount of time, then when that time runs out, he is born again, reborn back on earth. The cycle continues for the Buddhist until he reaches Nibbana(until he has through the transformation of his mind [the only vague understanding a christian could have of this is Rom. 12:2, not being conformed to the world, but transforming one's mind thru your holy scriptures], which takes place for the Buddhist through introspection {using Shamatha Meditation & Insight Meditation, and through the observance of the Noble Eightfold Path}! But what does this exactly mean. I can only give you a glimpse.
The key to transforming one's hearts and minds is to have an understanding of the way our thoughts and emotions work. We need to learn how to identify the opposing sides in our inner
conflicts. With anger, for example, we need to see how destructive anger is, and at the same time realize that there are antidotes within our own mind/thoughts and emotions that we can use to counter it. First, by understanding that afflictive thoughts and emotions are destuctive and negative, and second, by doing our best, using right effort to strengthen our positive thoughts and emotions. This is how we gradually reduce the force of anger, hatred, ignorance, discrimination, etc. The way to examine How our thoughts and emotions arise in us is through introspection. It is quite natural for many different thoughts, especially anxious distracting thoughts, to arise. When we(not just buddhists, but ALL people) leave them unexamined and untamed this leads to untold problems, crises, sufferings, and misery. This is why we must exercise mental discipline in
order to reduce the power of negative thoughts and emotions, such as anger, hatred, ignorance, discrimination, etc, We Need to Encourage their antidotes, which are Lovingkindness, Endurance, Wisdom, Understanding, Empathy, Compassion,
PATIENCE, and Tolerance. This is again, done through Shamatha Meditation, and Insight Meditation, and observance of the Eightfold Path ,which is right {wise] understanding,
right {wise] intensions & attitudes, right {wise] speech, right {wise] action,
right {wise] livelihood, right {wise] effort,
right {wise] mindfulness, and right {wise] concentration. "Which are explicitly explained in Much Detail through The Buddha's 45 Year Ministry." The result, if not in this lifetime, then the next life to come, is Nibbana. While on this Path there is much happiness, and a very stable inner mental Peace !!
The christain, the jew, the muslim, etc. believes that "every" human being is accountable to their God, and the end result is going to their heaven or hell, dependent upon if a person believes and practices what their scriptures teach, according to their savior, God, or great prophet.
The Buddhist knows he is not accountable to their (the christian, jewish, or muslim) God, to a God, that does not exist. The God-concept is fear based, as explained in the 2nd paragraph, and God/YHWH/ALLAH can not be proven, but is based on a mere blind faith.
The buddhist does not leave his destiny in the hands of a deity. But chooses to be responsible for his own Kamma, actions, and as a result knows he will go to one of the heavens or hells, described of in the buddhist scriptures, and then will be reborn, and the cycle continues, until he totally erradicates all his negative unwholesome mental and emotional defilements (ie: anger, hatred, impatience, attachments, etc.), thus reaching
Nibbana = ending the cycle of rebirths, and attaining Pari-Nibbana, the ultimate Goal.
The Buddhist knows he will not ever go to the christian, jewish, or muslim heaven OR Hell.
The Buddhist knows what the future holds for him, leaving his destiny in his own hands, not in the hands of any deity.
"As long as YOU (the readers) walk in love, wisdom and understanding, not judging, nor negatively criticizing the Buddhist or anyone else, (just as the Buddhist does not judge or negatively critisize the christian, jewish, or muslim way of life), then you Will Now have mental clarity on this subject!! "
Buddhists practice Love, Wisdom, Forgiveness, Patience and Tolerance toward ALL living beings, especially humans, This is our way of life. We accept all religions without placing judgment upon any person. Buddhism practices Tolerance toward all religions, and faiths. "Through understanding and Knowledge of all the above information, you will begin to attain wisdom."
Jesus taught to love one's enemies and to pray for those who persecute you !! The christain believes this, AND the Buddhist does also. Buddhists place Jesus and much of his teachings in high regard. We choose to love, and forgive those who persecute us, and practice Loving-Kindness Meditation for all those who judge us harshly, and persecute us out of ignorance, which is caused because of their dukka = their suffering. Buddhists understand, And send forth Lovingkindness, & Patience to all people.
With Metta.
